Tips on Protecting Your Valuables
- Display valuables in areas with consistent temperature and humidity. Attics and basements are undesirable storage locations because of extreme temperature fluctuations and the possibility of leaks and dampness.
- Pay attention to light. Display valuables out of direct sunlight. Even display cabinet lights can produce intense light and heat.
- Do not hang artwork or valuable objects over a fireplace. Besides heat, smoke and soot will damage artwork.
- Handle valuables carefully. Wear cotton gloves to protect items from body oils and fingerprints.
- Do not lift items by their most vulnerable parts such as handles and spouts. Don’t grab books by the top of the spine. Support books when they are open to avoid pressure on the spine. Don’t allow them to lay flat on a table or place them face down while open.
- Clean valuables gently using soft cloths and mild soap, if needed. Rough cleaning can destroy desirable patinas or scratch surfaces. Modern cleaning agents such as metal polish, dishwasher detergent, and furniture cleaners and polishes contain strong chemicals which can damage fragile items.
- Frame all art, especially paper and photographs, using museum quality materials. Most framers have these materials, such as acid free mats and mounting boards, available.
- Store items wrapped in acid free papers and placed in appropriate acid free boxes.
- Install smoke detectors in rooms with valuables to alert against smoke and fire.
- Have your valuables appraised and insured against loss.
